Museum of Ephemeral Culture: Character Food Package Database

"Those snack boxes and bags that excited us on supermarket shelves back in the day." This database is a private archive covering over 3,000 items of character food packaging collected from 1980 to the present. From legendary masterpieces like "Bikkuriman" and "Sailor Moon" to the latest modern trends, we shine a spotlight on packaging that was destined to be thrown away as mere "trash." Based on the belief that pop culture is true culture, we aim to preserve the "memories of the era" engraved on fragile plastic bags and boxes, redefining their value.

"Package Fate Theory" - Deciphering the Destiny of Disappearance

In this database, we develop our unique "Package Fate Theory," which systematizes the "process of becoming trash" that every package undergoes from over 50 perspectives. Beyond mere preservation records, we analyze the "irresistible forces leading to destruction," such as the physical pressure during opening, unconscious devaluation at home, and information loss due to distribution strategies. We unravel the miraculous background of how these items avoided the desperate fate of disposal and managed to "survive" until today.

They are calculated based on our own criteria, considering factors such as distribution volume, era, and package structure. Please note this includes some subjective judgment, so take it as a reference.

Where should I start collecting?
Start by keeping just one package that catches your eye at your local supermarket or convenience store. It doesn't have to be anything special.

You can search from the 1980s to the present by era, maker, or title.
How can I tell which packages might become rare?
The ephemerality score in our Package Fatalism analysis can be one guide. Take a good look around the site and judge with your own eyes.
Is there any value in food packaging?
We value it as a record rather than for its market price. If no one keeps them, the proof that a package ever existed is lost forever.

What is character food?
It is a general term for food products that feature characters from anime, games, and the like.
What is 'shokugan' (candy toys)?
It is a general term for food products that come with a bonus toy. On this site, we focus on the packaging itself rather than the bonus toy.

Most of the products featured are no longer sold, and we do not provide purchasing information. This site is intended purely as an archival record and exhibition.

Preservation
How should I store food packages?
For unopened items, the basics are to avoid direct sunlight, heat, and humidity, and to keep them in a sealed place. We also plan to share detailed storage tips in our columns and on YouTube.
Is it okay to keep them stored unopened?
Long-term storage carries risks such as deterioration, swelling, and leakage of the contents. Our goal is to preserve the packaging itself, and we cannot guarantee the quality of the contents, so please proceed at your own risk.
The package has a lingering smell.
Residual odor is one of the disappearance factors covered in our Package Fatalism analysis. Depending on the nature of the food, it may not be possible to remove it completely.
